Donnybrook is the home of Western Australia's apple industry. In 1954 the first Apple Festival was devised as a promotion for the Apple & Pear industry and a showcase for the produce of the South West. Easter continues to be the ideal time for the festival, when there is an abundance of fresh produce with apples and pears remaining plentiful, and the last of summer fruits still available. Our district is now producing a wide variety of fruit, vegetables and both table and wine grapes. The bi-annual event regularly attracts crowds of over 10,000 visitors to the region.
Our main attraction within the Fresh Produce Tent will be continuous tastings of different fruit varieties and other local produce, as well as audio visual displays of fruit production activities.
There are a range of activities providing non-stop entertainment for the entire family such as log chops, face painting, pony rides, agricultural and machinery displays, wine tastings, free children’s activities, live music, animal exhibits, street parade, Sideshow Alley, market stalls, the ArtJam Art Show, and a spectacular Fireworks display on Saturday Night.
The Apple Festival remains a major event in the calendar of the Donnybrook community to promote the town, the district and the diverse array of produce we grow.
2012
Australia celebrates the Year of the Farmer, and The Donnybrook Apple Festival will be 58 years old. It will be the 37th Festival overall and the 27th for Donnybrook.
This years’ theme is “Home Grown and Healthy”, elected to encourage the general public to gain a better understanding of how and where their fresh food is produced. The Donnybrook Apple Festival plays an important role in bridging that gap by giving urban dwellers a taste of country life and the opportunity for interchange between themselves and the people who produce the food they eat.
The DAF Committee has been invited to play host to the travelling 'Year of the Farmer' exhibit. This will be an added attraction for the 2012 Festival. |
